Japan House Los Angeles recently hosted an exclusive VIP preview and reception to celebrate the opening of its highly anticipated new exhibition, WASHOKU | Nature and Culture in Japanese Cuisine. The special event took place on May 21, 2026, offering guests an early opportunity to experience the exhibit before it officially opened to the public the next day.

The VIP preview began at 5:00 PM in the Japan House Gallery on Level 2, where attendees were among the first to explore the exhibit. Following the preview, a reception was held at 6:00 PM in the Japan House Salon on Level 5, featuring traditional Japanese refreshments and an atmosphere that honored Japan’s rich culinary heritage.

WASHOKU explores the deep cultural and natural roots of Japanese cuisine, renowned for its balance, seasonality, and artistry. Based on the fundamental ingredients of rice and fish, washoku is more than just food — it is a refined cultural achievement that embodies centuries of ingenuity and a deep reverence for nature.

Developed in collaboration with the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo and The Asahi Shimbun, this exhibition delves into the evolution, core elements, and cultural significance of this lUNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage. Notably, it was presented outside Japan for the first time during this event.

Visitors to the exhibition gained insight into how washoku reflects a harmonious relationship with the environment, emphasizing taste, technique, and seasonal awareness.

The exhibit will be on display from May 22 through October 18, 2026, with open hours Monday through Friday from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and weekends until 8:00 PM.

Admission remained free, inviting all to explore the depth and beauty of Japanese culinary traditions.
