<\/td>\nNew York, NY \u2013 July 4, 2021<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 After 15 months, Portugal is once again open to visitors from US and, this weekend, the country is celebrating their return along with the July 4 Independence Day holiday by lighting eight of its historic landmarks in red, white and blue:Lisbon:<\/strong>\u00a0the statue of D. Jos\u00e9 I, located in\u00a0Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 Lisbon\u2019s most beautiful square.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The equestrian statue of D. Jos\u00e9 I is a remarkable sculptural work: it was the first equestrian statue made in Portugal and the first sculptural public landmark dedicated to a living person. Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio, known as Terreiro do Pa\u00e7o (Royal Yard) prior to the 1755 earthquake, was the location of Portugal\u2019s Royal Palace since the 16th century, when King Manuel transferred the court there from the Castle of S\u00e3o Jorge (St. George). The entire yard was destroyed by the earthquake and\u00a0completely remodeled\u00a0during the Pombaline Era, a Portuguese architectural style, when its name changed to Pra\u00e7a do Com\u00e9rcio (Commerce Square).<\/p>\n

Porto:<\/strong>\u00a0Pal\u00e1cio da Bolsa<\/a>\u00a0(Stock Exchange Palace) is built on the ruins of the Saint Francis Convent, and known for welcoming Monarchs, Presidents, and Ministers from almost every country. The palace was built in the 19th century by the city’s Commercial Association and is known for its Neoclassical style.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Alentejo:<\/strong>\u00a0the iconic\u00a0Castle of Marv\u00e3o<\/a>,<\/u>\u00a0about 2h40min drive from Lisbon and close to the border with Spain, is known for its well-preserved\u00a0medieval style and high walls, that form a fortress around the Marv\u00e3o village. The castle is\u00a0on one of the highest points in the Serra de S\u00e3o Mamede and the village has the typical whitewashed houses from Alentejo.<\/p>\n

Azores:<\/strong>\u00a0Portas da Cidade (City Gates), in\u00a0Ponta Delgada<\/a>,<\/u>\u00a0S\u00e3o Miguel Island,<\/a>\u00a0are the perfect starting point for exploring the city. They are quickly identified by their three arches that link the sea front area and the Pra\u00e7a da Rep\u00fablica. The typical architecture emphasizes the contrast between the white walls and the basalt details.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Cascais:<\/strong>\u00a0Museum Condes de Castro Guimar\u00e3es<\/a>,<\/u>\u00a0was built in 1900 by Jorge O\u2019Neill. The Museum is a classic example of \u201csummer architecture,\u201d inviting visitors to enter the wonder of this 19th<\/sup>century revival of the era of romance. It is also home to a collection of significant national and international paintings, furniture, porcelain, and jewelry.<\/p>\n

Lamego:<\/strong>\u00a0Nossa Senhora dos Rem\u00e9dios Sanctuary<\/a>\u00a0was built between the 18th and 20th centuries and is still a Marian shrine visited by pilgrims from all over the country to honor Our Lady of Remedies. The monumental Baroque staircase (with 686 steps) that gives access to the Sanctuary is divided over several levels and the interior is decorated in Rocaille style and entirely dedicated to Marian iconography.<\/p>\n

Montalegre, Vila Real:<\/strong>\u00a0the medieval\u00a0Castle of Montalegre<\/a>\u00a0stands on a colossal rock, a sign of its strategic military importance over the centuries.<\/p>\n

Soajo, Peneda-Ger\u00eas National Park:<\/strong>\u00a0Espigueiros do Soajo<\/a>\u00a0(Granaries of Soajo), located in the village of Soajo, are an impressive group of twenty-four stone espigueiros (granaries), with architectural features from the 18th<\/sup>and 19th<\/sup>centuries, and used by the community to store corn, which is abundant in the region. The crosses at the top of the granaries represent the divine protection of its content.<\/p>\n
