THE BURKE MANSION IN MACON
A STEP BACK IN TIME TO VICTORIAN LUXURY
Macon, Georgia (Perfect Travel Today)11/8/17/–The Burke Mansion in Macon is a luxurious bed and breakfast hotel that takes you back to a Victorian age of elegance and style. The mansion used to be the home of the Burke family, a Victorian merchant who became extremely wealthy from selling home improvements, and by all accounts they were also obsessively private people. An invitation to the Burke Mansion in those days was very coveted, but now you can experience this all for a reasonable price and you will want to return.
The current owners are restaurant/hospitality people who were seeking a quieter and mellow lifestyle, so they discovered this house a few years back and have adorned it with artwork, crockery and a staggering amount of artifacts from the era. The three rooms currently available are also all luxurious, and the breakfast is outstanding that you can have either in your suite or in the dining room. You mark a card the night before and bingo you wake up excited to check it out. The best coffee I have had in a long time.
freshly squeezed orange juice, eggs done in a multiple of styles and of course the amazing Belgian waffles. On the three days we stayed there I met three different couples from Savannah passing through, and one of the couples had been there twenty-one times before. Yes there are also evening cocktails and a decadent cake awaits you in your room when you get back home from a night on the town in downtown Macon. Classical music plays throughout the day, and I believe that the piano concerto’s from Grieg are a particular favorite of the hands on host Doug who oversees everything at the mansion.
When it comes to the modern luxuries the beds and the bedding are top of the line, and there is Direct TV in every room along with complimentary Wi-Fi. Soft drinks and bottled water are available all day, and although the brochure claims twenty-four hour concierge service, it is unlikely any guest staying here would need to take advantage of that. All this is a bit of a steal at around $229 a night, but obviously because there are only three rooms at the moment. booking in advance is essential.
The house is on Georgia Avenue in Macon, a sedate street full of anti-bellum style homes and also the home of the famed Mercer College. It is also walking distance from Hay House, a National Historic Landmark, and is considered one of the finest Antibellum houses in America. They have daily tours and for those of you into Confederate history it was the home of William Butler Johnston, keeper of the Confederate treasury.
